Being a mediator to bridge industry and the academic, TLO have research results from university researchers patented for technology transfer to the industry. In Japan, numbers of TLO has been set up after the establishment of "Law for Promoting University-Industry Technology Transfer" (TLO law) in 1998.
By creating a university-based new industry to give back a part of the revenue to the researchers for their another research activity, TLO take part as a core organization of industry-academia collaborations.

2 Are TLO activities more active in the United States and Europe?

In the United States and Europe, many TLO are situated in universities so as to actively transfer the technologies to the industry including technology-based spin-out companies.
Especially in the United States, "the Bayh-Dole Act" was constituted in 1980. This determined that even patents coming out of federally funded research and developments were to belong to the university. One of our strengths is our exclusive partnering agreement for Intellectual Properties management with Kyoto University, Kyushu University, Wakayama University, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and Nara Medical University. Kansai TLO is responsible for technology transfer operations of almost all the IP derived from these university partners. Also, we introduce research results from our partners overseas such as Aalto University (Finland), Auckland UniServices Limited (New Zealand), University of Szeged (Hungary), Bayerische Patentallianz (Germany) and Otago University (New Zealand) to Japanese companies.

In addition, we receive capital investments from Kyoto University and Wakayama University, co-managing with these universities.
